England vs Ukraine Live Euro Cup 2012 preview

Wayne Rooney’s time as nervous spectator is over and England’s talisman is certain to return to the starting line-up for the Group D decider against Ukraine. Now it is the co-hosts who are sweating over their star striker’s involvement in their date with destiny as the totemic Andriy Shevchenko continues to struggle with a knee injury. Rooney’s suspension was hard enough for England to swallow; should Ukraine take to the field without the retiring Shevchenko, a small shred of the nation’s footballing soul will have been lost forever.
Rooney’s return throws up a series of selection dilemmas for Roy Hodgson, given that both Andy Carroll and Danny Welbeck offered potent auditions to partner him in the 3-2 win over Sweden. The manager has decreed the conundrum a “classic manager’s headache”. Carroll’s presence would obviously complement a more arterial approach, while Welbeck would represent a significant test of Ukraine’s ability to stay tight to a player with far more dynamic movement. They could both miss out, though Ashley Young’s unremarkable shift against Sweden will count against him playing a supporting role to Rooney. Theo Walcott’s game-changing cameo in Kiev has provided Hodgson with another quandary, provided he is fully recovered from the latest occurrence of his hamstring injury, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain offered glimpses in the draw with France that, despite his tender years, he can open doors at international level. England need only draw to go through but, with Spain the reward for a runners-up spot in Group D, and Ukraine needing a victory to qualify, they will sit back at their peril.
England player to watch: Wayne Rooney
The Manchester United striker was discussed more during the first two games in the English media than he would have been had he played but, after weeks of training, he finally has a chance to put his stamp on the continent’s premier stage. His self-inflicted absence has enhanced the notion that he owes England some big performances, the quality goals England produced in Kiev only adding to the weight of expectancy. Without a goal in a major tournament since Euro 2004, this would a good time to end his drought.
Ukraine player to watch: Andriy Yarmolenko
The winger excelled against Sweden in Ukraine’s landmark victory, setting up the first goal for Dynamo Kiev team-mate Shevchenko, and though his team struggled against France he still represented the co-hosts’ chief threat. If deployed in his usual slot on the right side of midfield he can test the ageing legs of Ashley Cole and try to emulate the standard of delivery he achieved in game one.
Key battle: Scott Parker v Anatoliy Tymoschuk
Surely, the two representatives that would be pushed forward if the game was to be decided on an arm-wrestle. Both players will have similar briefs: to patrol from deep, limit supply to the opposition strikers, and provide quick possession to the players who can do damage. With Ukraine needing to win, Tymoschuk is likely to have more on his plate than Parker if they end up having to chase the game.
Stat: In Theo Walcott’s 30 minutes of involvement at Euro 2012, the Arsenal player has scored a goal, provided another and maintained a 100% pass completion rate (eight out of eight).
Trivia: Andriy Shevchenko and Andriy Voronin made a total of 75 Premier League appearances for Chelsea and Liverpool respectively, but managed just 14 goals between them.
Odds: England (2.20), Ukraine (3.50) and the draw (3.30) are on offer with bet365. Wayne Rooney is (2.60) to score anytime while Andriy Shevchenko is (3.10).
Prediction: Ukraine will surely start fast and England will have to withstand heavy early pressure, but they have the edge in terms of quality and should secure the draw they need to progress.

Italy vs Ireland Euro 2012 preview From Espnsoccernet.com

Italy’s story of Euro 2012 so far has been a tale of two draws – one heralded, one lamented. After earning plaudits for their enterprising 1-1 stalemate with world champions Spain in their opening game, the same team and the same tactics were far less celebrated when they were held to the same scoreline by Croatia.
Cesare Prandelli’s 3-5-2 formation operated fluently for a game-and-a-half until Slaven Bilic’s tactical tinkering at the interval halted its momentum, blunting Italy’s wing backs and forcing them deeper into their own half. Despite some efficient forward movement, they have registered only two goals – the last an expertly taken free-kick from the evergreen Andrea Pirlo. His midfield prompting has been one of the shining lights of Prandelli’s operation so far.
Neither Antonio Cassano nor Mario Balotelli has found the net, despite a steady trickle of chances falling their way. But there is hope for a better goals return against Ireland, who have provided the leakiest defence at the tournament. Italy must win their final game to stand any chance of making the last eight. If they do gain three points, and there is a decisive result in Spain’s clash with Croatia, they’ll qualify in second. If they win and the other game ends in a draw it gets complicated. If Spain v Croatia ends 0-0, Italy go through with Spain. If it finishes 1-1 it will come down to goal difference. If Spain and Croatia serve up a 2-2 draw, they will both go through and Italy will head home. Conspiracy theories have swiftly been denounced by both camps.
Italy player to watch: Antonio Cassano
It has been a case of nearly but not quite for the mercurial striker at Euro 2012 – his controversial aside about homosexuals making more headlines than his performances on the pitch. But there is a sense Cassano is nearing top form, as his first half showing against Croatia suggested. The Milan forward can expect more room in which to operate in against Ireland and must utilise it properly if he is to finally make the big impact many expected from him before the tournament began.
Ireland player to watch: Robbie Keane
Ireland’s captain has had to feed on scraps in the tournament so far, with Ireland’s creative players reduced to mere bystanders during the defeat to Spain. Unlike some of his colleagues, he has rejected talk of international retirement, so a demonstration that he is still able to cut it on such a glittering stage would be timely before Ireland’s World Cup qualification campaign begins.
Key Battle: Andrea Pirlo v Keith Andrews
With respect, a mismatch in terms of ability, but Andrews – and midfield colleague Glenn Whelan – must get close to Pirlo to stunt his expansive range of passing. Croatia afforded the 33-year-old time and space in the first half of their match and paid the price, but profited in the second when they made sure he was shackled. Andrews must do the same if Ireland are to prosper.
Trivia: Ireland have only beaten Italy twice in the 11 games they’ve played against each other but 18 years ago to the day they will meet in Poznan came one of the Republic’s most famous wins, a 1-0 success over Italy at World Cup ’94 in the United States, courtesy of a Ray Houghton goal.
Stats: Italy have now gone six matches without a win at major final tournaments – the worst run in their history.
Odds: Italy (1.30), the draw (5.50) and Ireland (11.00) are on offer with bet365, with a 3-3 draw available at 81.00.
Prediction: Ireland have never lost all their games at a major tournament and their chastened pack will perform much better than in their opening two games but needs must for Italy, who should have enough to claim victory.

Portugal vs Holland Euro 2012 preview
The eyes of the sports world will be on Portugal and the Netherlands today at Euro 2012 when the two world football powers play a pivotal group-stage match.
It’s judgment day in the group of death. While victory is a requirement for the Netherlands to advance, Portugal can advance to the semifinal with a win or the combination of a draw and a Denmark loss to Germany.
When: Sunday, June 17 at 2:45 p.m. ET
Player to Watch for Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo
Christiano Ronaldo
Superstar winger Cristiano Ronaldo has no goals scored and zero assists at Euro 2012, and even though he’s been a factor in games with his pace and attacking runs, he hasn’t changed a match with a big goal yet.
Ronaldo will be under the microscope on Sunday, and if Portugal were to lose with Ronaldo playing poorly, the reputation of the Real Madrid star would take a hit.
Player to Watch for Netherlands: Arjen Robben
Arjen Robben
Arjen Robben
The Netherlands winger has played poorly at Euro 2012 and is the target of blame for many Dutch fans who are disappointed in their team’s performance thus far.
Robben needs to improve his play or the Netherlands won’t defeat Portugal on Sunday. He needs to attack a weak Portugal defense and use his ability to create scoring chances for the Dutch to have success.
