Facebook is a social networking website launched in Feb, 2004 to share and make the world more open and connected. Within the short period of time, facebook is able to make place in everyone’s heart. A survey conducted by London School of Economic shows that it has been so popular that there is one facebook user among every fourteen in the world. Another study made by compete.com shows that Facebook has been ranked as the most used social network by world widely monthly active users. And according to World status till July, 2012, there are 700 million Facebook users all over the world.
Although being so popular and mostly visited website, Facebook has met with several controversies. It has been banned and blocked in several countries. It has been blocked in several countries including Pakistan, Syria, People’s Republic of China, Vietnam, Iran and North Korea. Recently, Facebook has been banned in Bangladesh for temporary. These days, it also has been banned at many places of work. It has also been banned in various academic institution like college, school and public institution like library. And the main reason behind the block and ban of Facebook is what they call misused pattern.
The misused of Facebook ranges from publishing sensitive photos, cartoons, videos staring on someone’s faith, belief, posting vulgar status, comments, creating fake account and using it to torture and fool others. Misuse also means excessive use of Facebook forgetting his/her duty, responsibility killing his useful and productive time etc.
In the context of Nepal, the trend of misusing it is also increasing gradually. Facebook should be used for the purpose of sharing useful information to the wider circle of people. “Be good, do good” is the guiding principal for everything.
